Fishing the Surf Since 2003

Katie started fishing the surf in October 2003. Back in those days she wouldn’t even bait her own hook or take her fish off of her hook! Today, she’s a pro. I think she even likes the smell of “shrimpy fingers.” :) Katie doesn’t spend as much of her beach time chasing after the fish (like she used to). But she still likes to “wet a hook” every now and then.

Katie caught several good fish during her Spring Break week on the Island. She caught this nice Speckled Trout in the surf early in the week. She snagged this awesome Spanish Mackerel from the SGI Bridge/Pier. The mackerel were running through the bay that week. Katie caught nine … this one was her biggest. She had to curl the tail to get it in the cooler!

Katie’s Big Catch

Katie hooked this big Atlantic Sting Ray almost at her feet in the surf while fishing for Whiting for dinner. It was, by far, her biggest fish ever caught in the surf. She landed it herself, even with sub-standard equipment (note the old enclosed reel … which barely worked). Needless to say, she will have a new rig before Spring Break!
